Description

This is a fundamental work of Polish biography and architectural history, still an indispensable source of knowledge about the creators of the Polish built landscape. Stanisław Łoza (1883-1948) – a prominent varsavianist, art historian and herald – compiled this monumental dictionary with extraordinary care, creating a compendium that for decades formed the basis of research into the history of architecture in Poland.

The 1930 edition presented here is the second, completed edition of this publication . Łoza significantly expanded the biographical material compared to the first edition of 1923, adding new profiles and revising the existing information. The dictionary contains biographical entries of architects, builders, sculptors and craftsmen associated with construction – both Polish and foreigners working in the Polish lands from the earliest times to the author’s present day. The entries are accompanied by detailed information on their biographies, education, most important realizations and a bibliography.

This work is invaluable to art historians, architects, historic preservationists, genealogists and all those interested in the history of Polish architecture and urban planning. The publication was published by the Mianowski Fund – Institute for the Promotion of Science, one of the most distinguished Polish institutions supporting science in the interwar period .
