The story is set toward the end of the reign of Louis XIII and tells of a conspiracy by the Marquis Henri de Cinq-Mars, the king\u2019s favorite, against Cardinal Richelieu. Vigny writes about the decline of chivalric honor in the face of modern absolute power. An important character is Fran\u00e7ois-Auguste de Thou, a friend of Cinq-Mars, who, out of loyalty, follows him to the scaffold. Translated by Witold \u0141aszczy\u0144ski (1874\u20131949).<\/p>\n<p>Three volumes in two books, bound together with Jerzy Orlicz\u2019s novel *Warjat* (1923).
