Smiles argued that a person\u2019s fate depends primarily on their work, perseverance, integrity, and thrift. Examples included the biographies of inventors and engineers such as James Watt and George Stephenson, the son of a miner who learned to read as an adult. The book was published in Polish as *Prawd\u0105 a prac\u0105*: first in Warsaw in 1867, translated by the team at *Przegl\u0105d Tygodniowy* under the direction of Adam Wi\u015blicki, and a year later in Krak\u00f3w, at W. Kirchmayer\u2019s *Czas* printing house.
