\u201cAutumn Verses\u201d is Maria Szpyrk\u00f3wna\u2019s first collection of poems. The opening poem of the cycle is dated \u201cZakopane\u2013Belarus, 1911\u201d: \u201cAnd they will go there, into the vast distance, \/ they will go, unknown, into an unknown world, \/ somewhere from the silver alpine pastures of the Tatra Mountains \/ to the burial mounds of the Belarusian fields\u2026\u201d. <\/p>\n
Maria Szpyrk\u00f3wna (born Maria Horska-Szpyrk\u00f3wna, 1893\u20131977), born in Vitebsk, made her literary debut in 1909 in *Pr\u0105d*; *Autumn Verses* was her debut poetry collection. She later wrote social and occult novels, books for children and young adults, reportage, and essays; she contributed to *Bluszcz* and *P\u0142omyk*, and, after 1945, with Polish Radio. She was vice president of the Polish Metapsychic Society and, beginning in 1935, served as editor of *Przegl\u0105d Metapsychiczny*. <\/p>\n
On the half-title page, there is a purple stamp reading \u201cJerzy Gedl\u201d and some pencil notes\u2014traces of the book\u2019s previous owner.<\/p>\n
This copy underwent conservation treatment at the Antykwariat Polski workshop. The book block was mechanically cleaned, and the sections were re-sewn by hand, restoring the volume\u2019s structural stability. <\/p>\n
