First edition of the first novel by Slawomir Mro\u017cek (1930-2013) – a writer who in time became one of the most outstanding playwrights of the 20th century and an icon of Polish literature. The book was published by Wydawnictwo Literackie in Krakow in 1956 – a time of political thaw, which allowed literature to take a breather from socialist-realist patterns. It contains 286 pages. The cover design and illustrations were done by Ryszard Twardoch. The print run was 5205 copies.
\nThe story is set in the fictional village of Trzmielowa G\u00f3ra, where rivalries between parish priests, the head of a state farm, a former general and a colorful gallery of characters create a picture of post-war Poland seen through the crooked lens of the grotesque. Mrozek – before he became a world-class playwright – was a satirical cartoonist and columnist. This dual skill is evident in every scene: precision of observation, economy of words, accuracy of point.
