\nLuxury album dedicated to the history of one of the world’s most recognizable brands. The author, British journalist and design expert Josh Sims, tells how the Swiss company founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis became synonymous with precision and luxury. The lavishly illustrated publication traces the history of groundbreaking models – from the Oyster (the world’s first waterproof watch, 1926), to the Datejust (1945) and Submariner (1953), to the GMT-Master and Daytona.
\nThe book goes beyond chronicling facts. Sims explores the phenomenon of the brand’s social impact – its presence in the boldest explorations of the 20th century (the 1953 conquest of Everest, the 1960 descent into the Mariana Trench), its links to cinema and popular culture, and the famous auction of Paul Newman’s Daytona watch, which fetched a price of nearly $18 million in 2017. A separate theme is the phenomenon of Rolex as a capital investment – vintage models regularly break auction house records.
