The publication was released in 2000 in Cracow by Wydawnictwo Literackie as part of the prestigious series “Collected Works of Czesław Miłosz.”

“The Issa Valley” is a poetic novel, not devoid of autobiographical elements, depicting the story of a pubescent boy Thomas Dilbin, staying under the care of his grandparents Surkont in the Polish manor house in Kaunas Lithuania, on the Issa River (the prototype was the Samogitian river Niewiaża) . The historical background of the story is national and social conflicts in independent Lithuania after World War I, land reform and complications arising from the demarcation of the country’s new border. The boy is surrounded by strange, tragically affected people, living in a world of superstitious beliefs, primitive customs and ancient songs, all of which become material for philosophical reflection on the mystery of existence and the horror of omnipresent death. According to the author, it is a “strongly Manichean book,” a “masked theological treatise.”

The novel was written from the autumn of 1953 to June 1954 in France and was first published in 1955 by the Paris Literary Institute as the 10th volume of the legendary “Library of “Culture”” . In an interview with Renata Gorczynska, the poet explained that he wrote it at a time of great internal crisis, when he was unable to write poems, and described it as his “treatment” . It was named the best émigré book of 1955 by the London “News” . The first official national edition did not appear until 1981, after Miłosz was awarded the Nobel Prize, as earlier attempts at publication(including in 1957) were blocked by the censors of the People’s Republic of Poland due to the “general political activities of the author” .

It is part of the prestigious series “Collected Works” – the most complete edition of Milosz’s works, covering his poetry, prose, essays and translations . The volume comes with a “Footnote after the years” – an updating author’s introduction. The copy is clean and preserved in very good condition. This is a must-have for the collector of Milosz’s works, the lover of his autobiographical prose and the bibliophile seeking a representative edition of this poetic tale of the lost world of childhood in Lithuania.

Cracow 2000

Wydawnictwo Literackie (Czesław Miłosz Collected Works series).

307 s. 21 cm.

Published as part of the collected works.

A clean copy.
