We present the edition of “Man Among Scorpions” by Czeslaw Milosz (1911-2004) – poet, prose writer, essayist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1980), one of the most outstanding and influential Polish intellectuals of the 20th century. The publication was released in 2000 in Krakow by Znak Publishing House as part of the prestigious series “Collected Works of Czeslaw Milosz.” <\/p>\n
“Man Among Scorpions” is an essay on the life and work of Stanislaw Brzozowski (1878-1911) – an outstanding philosopher, writer and publicist . The book, the fruit of Milosz’s long-standing fascination with Brzozowski, was written in 1961 in Berkeley, California, and was written on the 50th anniversary of the philosopher’s death . A large part of it is filled with excerpts from Brzozowski’s books, made in 1959 at the Polish Library on the island of Saint Louis in Paris. It was first published in 1962 by the Paris Literary Institute as the 77th volume of the legendary “Library of “Culture”” . <\/p>\n
Milosz thoroughly discusses Brzozowski’s philosophy and the reception of his work, and confronts Brzozowski’s thought with philosophical systems outside his home era (Jean-Paul Sartre, Boris Pasternak, Henri Lefebvre, Gy\u00f6rgy Luk\u00e1cs, Andr\u00e9 Malraux, Simone Weil) to expose the originality, momentousness and prophetic nature of his analyses. The author devotes an extensive chapter to the so-called “Brzozowski affair” (the writer’s unfounded accusation of collaboration with the Tsarist Okhrana), which resembles the “Milosz affair” – his own drama of breaking with the government in Warsaw in 1951 and the fierce campaign against him in the pages of the London press. <\/p>\n
As Mi\u0142osz himself admitted in “A Footnote After Years” (2000), when he gave the book its title, he identified himself with “a Florentine loner flitting among venomous suspicions.” The book on Brzozowski turns out to be, in a sense, a camouflaged confession by Milosz himself, the most profound testimony to which is the convergence of the problems, themes and motifs he extracts from Brzozowski’s writings with those in his work. As he himself stated, his main goal was to rebuke “the proper stature of the wronged writer” . <\/p>\n
It is part of the prestigious “Collected Works” series – the most complete edition of Milosz’s works, covering his poetry, prose, essays and translations. The 2000 edition is the first official domestic edition of this book as part of the Collected Works (the first domestic edition in official circulation was published in 1982 by PIW, after years of second circulation in 1981). The copy is clean and preserved in very good condition.
