VOLUMES I-IV. [1967]

We present an edition of one of the greatest masterpieces of Russian and world literature – “Silent Don” by Mikhail Sholokhov (1905-1984), winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1965) . It was published in 1967 in Warsaw by the State Publishing Institute (PIW) in the prestigious “Novels of the 20th Century” series. It was translated by Waclaw Rogowicz (volumes I and II) and Andrzej Stawar (volumes III and IV) – outstanding Polish translators of Russian literature.

“The Silent Don” is an epic, four-volume panorama of the life of the Donskoy Cossacks during the tumultuous period of 1912-1922 – from World War I, through the 1917 Revolution, to the Russian Civil War . The main character, Grigory Melekhov, is a man torn between duty, passion (his tragic love for Aksinia is one of the most famous themes in world literature) and loyalty to tradition, tossing about between “whites” and “reds,” searching for his own path at a time when “the world stood on its head.” The novel, to which Sholokhov devoted 12 years of his life (1928-1940), is not only a harrowing picture of war and revolution, but also a profound psychological study of man, his passions and choices. It is considered a continuation of Tolstoy’s great Russian epic tradition. In 1965, Sholokhov received the Nobel Prize in Literature for this novel.

“The Silent Don” was subjected to censorship and rewrites for many years in the USSR – Stalin personally approved the final version of the text. In Poland, the first complete edition of the novel was published in 1951. The novel has been screened many times – the most famous three-part film version by Sergei Gerasimov dates from 1957. In 2005, the Polish daily newspaper Rzeczpospolita named “The Silent Don” one of the 20 most important books of all time.

This is the 11th edition (dated 1967) belonging to PIW’s “Novels of the 20th Century” series, which is sought after by collectors. Complete copies in good condition are increasingly rare on the market. The presented copy is clean and preserved in very good condition. It is a must-have for a collector of world literature, a lover of Russian prose and a bibliophile looking for a representative edition of this masterpiece.

8758×1-20-A-X

Warsaw 1967

State Publishing Institute (20th Century Novels series). 4 vols. 20 cm.

Translated by Waclaw Rogowicz (vols.
