This is the first edition of a unique publication by Andrzej Niemojewski (1864-1921) – one of the most fascinating and controversial figures of Polish modernism. Niemojewski, a poet, prose writer, playwright, publicist, as well as a pioneer of Polish religious studies and freethought , combined social radicalism with mysticism and astrology in his work. <\/p>\n
“The Polish Sky,” published in 1914 by the Warsaw “Polish Library,” is not only a collection of images (70 illustrations), but above all Niemojewski’s manifesto, in which he developed his theory of the astral origin of Christianity. He was a representative of the mythological-astralist school, seeking the genesis of beliefs in astronomical phenomena, which he wrote about, among other things, in “Mysteries of Christian Astrology” from 1913. <\/p>\n
The year 1914, when the book was published, was a turning point in the publicist’s life. While Europe was entering the war, Niemojewski was fighting a parallel battle of worldview. Although he had previously fought to preserve the secular “Dabrowski Mazurka” and was active in the socialist movement (PPS), it was during this period that his magazine “My\u015bl Niepodleg\u0142a” began to evolve in a nationalist direction . <\/p>\n
