This is the fourth edition of the fundamental textbook written by Franciszek Stefczyk (1861-1924), an outstanding economist, educator and pioneer of Polish financial cooperatives. The publication was published in 1927 in Lviv by the Patronage of Agricultural Cooperatives, three years after the author’s death, which testifies to the enduring relevance and importance of this work. <\/p>\n
Franciszek Stefczyk, a graduate of the Jagiellonian University, was the creator of the first savings and loan associations in Galicia (starting in 1890), which were called “Stefczyk’s associations” in his honor. His activities focused on disseminating rural cooperative credit unions, organizing courses for employees of the emerging cooperatives, and creating the legal and organizational basis for agricultural and commercial cooperatives. Stefczyk was the author of 128 works related to the cooperative movement, including 13 textbooks and 12 scientific research papers. <\/p>\n
The presented manual is a practical compendium of knowledge for cooperative credit unions, covering the principles of organization, management and record-keeping of savings and loan associations. Stefczyk’s work played a huge role in building the service and small business sector in the revived Poland – one and a half million people belonged to Stefczyk’s 3500 credit unions during the interwar period. <\/p>\n
