This is the second, revised and greatly expanded edition (the first edition was published in 1936) of the fundamental work of Polish ornithology by Prof. Jan Bogumil Sokolowski (1899-1982) . The publication was published in 1958 by the State Publishing Institute (PIW) in Warsaw . <\/p>\n
Prof. Jan Sokolowski – an outstanding zoologist, ornithologist, professor at the University of Poznan and the Higher School of Agriculture in Poznan, as well as a talented painter and illustrator – has devoted his entire life to research and popularization of knowledge about birds . His scientific output consists of more than 200 publications, of which “Birds of the Polish lands” is considered a magnum opus . He received his habilitation precisely on the basis of the first edition of this work in 1936 . <\/p>\n
The work, divided into two extensive volumes (Volume I: 441 pages; Volume II: 569 pages), is a comprehensive monograph of the avifauna of Poland. Volume I contains general characteristics of birds, a systematic overview and detailed descriptions of individual species, while Volume II is devoted to the biology of birds their reproduction, migration, nutrition and protection . The extraordinary value of the publication is enhanced by the numerous illustrations, made with passion and extraordinary precision – because the author himself illustrated his books, combining scientific and artistic talent . <\/p>\n
This book, despite the passage of years, is still an excellent treasure trove of knowledge for all ornithologists and nature lovers . The presented copy is clean, in very good condition and has been bound in an exclusive, handmade binding of natural leather by the Polish Antiquarian Bindery. <\/p>\n
