After 25 years of working in an antiquarian bookstore and a bookbinding workshop, I can confidently say that the mere fact that a title had a small print run or is hard to find does not automatically translate into the price someone is willing to pay for it.

Is a rare book valuable? Several factors that determine this

Below is a list of factors that an antiquarian bookseller takes into account when assessing the actual market value of old books—regardless of how difficult it was to find a particular copy.

Demand—in other words, whether anyone actually wants it. A book may be rare simply because no one had a reason to keep it—for example, a niche official pamphlet from the 19th century. If there are no collectors interested in the subject, its rarity remains merely a bibliographic curiosity rather than a factor influencing its price.

Condition. A rare copy with a damaged spine, torn pages, or water damage loses a significant portion of its potential value. Sometimes, a unique copy in poor condition is worth less than a widely available edition in pristine condition.

The historical and literary significance of the title. First editions by authors firmly established in the literary canon—such as Julian Stryjkowski’s *Austeria* or the works of Korczak—derive their value from the stature of the work itself, with rarity serving as a secondary factor rather than the primary one.

Binding and Edition. The same title in different bindings or print runs can cost several or even a dozen times more—we discuss this issue in greater detail in our article on which book editions are more valuable. The rarity of a specific edition is often more important here than the rarity of the title itself.

Provenance and history of the copy. An author’s dedication, a bookplate belonging to a well-known figure, or evidence of ownership by an important library—these factors increase a book’s value regardless of whether the title is common or rare. A copy with a history can fetch a higher price than a much rarer but anonymous counterpart.

Completeness. In the case of multi-volume editions, such as Gloger’s *Encyklopedia staropolska* or Korczak’s collected works, the absence of a single volume can reduce the value of the entire set disproportionately, relative to how rare the missing item is.

Fashion and current trends in collecting. Interest in certain areas—emigration literature, book illustration, and bookbinding—fluctuates over time. A title considered rare a decade ago may generate less excitement among buyers today if collectors’ tastes have changed.

Place and method of sale. The same item can fetch different prices at a brick-and-mortar antique store, at a themed auction, or in a private sale. We’ve described the pricing mechanism at antique auctions in more detail in our article on the journey a book takes from listing to sale.

When Rarity Really Drives Up the Price

Rarity begins to have a real impact on the market value of old books when it coincides with demand—that is, when there are few copies available and, at the same time, many interested buyers. This is the case with first editions of important works of Polish literature, unique émigré prints, or works featuring illustrations by renowned artists, such as woodcut graphic novels like Lynd Ward’s *Madman’s Drum*. The same is true of prints published abroad under difficult historical circumstances—we discussed the specifics of this market in our article on the history of Polish émigré publishing houses. In such cases, low print runs and collector interest do indeed go hand in hand.

How to check this yourself before getting a quote

Before assuming that your copy is valuable simply because it’s hard to find another one, it’s worth checking a few things on your own: whether the title appears in auction catalogs from recent years, in what condition similar copies were sold, and whether there is a collector community interested in that particular author or subject. We’ve compiled a list of helpful questions to ask an appraiser in our article on the valuation of antiquarian books —it’s a good starting point to avoid being caught off guard by a dishonest offer based solely on the notion of “rarity.”

Rarity is just one of many factors that together determine a book’s market value—condition, demand, provenance, and edition are at least as important. Therefore, it is always worth treating a low print run as a starting point for further analysis, rather than a ready-made answer to the question of price.

Rarity and a book’s value are not synonymous—we explain what factors truly determine the price of old books on the antiquarian book market.

[861

post-38166","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
["GET
