A customer asks if it’s even worth looking at, since it looks modest, the paper is of poorer quality than prewar editions, and the typeface is sometimes uneven. And it is precisely at moments like these that one must explain that Polish émigré publishing constitutes a distinct and very important chapter in the history of our literature—often more important than what was being published at the same time in the country under censorship.

After 1945, a significant part of Polish literary life moved abroad—not out of artistic choice, but out of necessity. Writers who were unwilling or unable to return to communist-ruled Poland had to find a way to get their work published at all. This led to the emergence of publishing centers that, for decades, filled the void left by literature that could not be published legally in Poland.

Parisian Culture and the Literary Institute

The most recognizable symbol of this phenomenon is the Paris-based *Kultura*—a monthly magazine published by the Literary Institute and edited by Jerzy Giedroyc, first in Italy and later in Maisons-Laffitte, near Paris. It was there, in the building now often referred to simply as Maison-Laffitte, that one of the most important platforms for free Polish thought was created over the course of decades. *Kultura* was not merely a magazine—a book publishing house known as Biblioteka Kultury developed around it, publishing works that could not be printed in the People’s Republic of Poland due to censorship. It was there that the writings of Witold Gombrowicz, Czesław Miłosz, and Gustaw Herling-Grudziński found a home before they could even reach Polish readers at home—often through underground channels, smuggled in, or photocopied on carbon paper.

It’s worth remembering that these books were produced under conditions far removed from the comfort of large publishing houses. Small print runs, economical typesetting, and paper of lower quality than in Western publications—all of this makes it difficult to unequivocally assess the condition of such copies today. When valuing them, it’s worth keeping in mind the same principles we described in our article on which book editions are more valuable and why the same novel can cost ten times as much —in the case of first editions published in exile, it is often precisely this modest, limited print run that determines their current collector’s value.

London Publishing Houses and Another Path to Emigration

London took a slightly different path than Paris. There, the community was more closely tied to the Polish government-in-exile and military traditions—publishing houses emerged that released soldiers’ memoirs, historical studies of the September Campaign, and political analyses. The history of London’s publishing houses is also the history of periodicals, among which *Wiadomości*—which brought together a community of writers and journalists unaffiliated with the reality of the Polish People’s Republic—is still remembered today. Alongside political and historical texts, works of fiction—poetry, prose, and memoirs—were also published in London, often in print runs numbering in the hundreds rather than thousands, which today makes them rare collector’s items.

The difference between Paris and London was also a matter of worldview. Giedroyc and his circle sought dialogue with the homeland and with Poland’s eastern neighbors, while part of the London community clung more firmly to a traditional, prewar vision of Poland. Together, however, these two paths shaped the image of the émigré community as a place where Polish literature could exist free from censorship—and that is their shared, enduring contribution.

Why Are These Books So Hard to Identify and Value Today?

The problem with emigration editions is that they rarely made their way into public libraries in Poland—in fact, quite the opposite: owning them was often risky. They made their way into the country as single copies, so today, the copies circulating among antiquarian booksellers and collectors are primarily those that survived from private libraries, sometimes stored under very different conditions. The distinctive, simple paperback binding of many of these editions can be misleading—it’s easy to mistake their modest appearance for low value, when in fact the opposite is often true. We’ve actually addressed the question of how to distinguish a factory binding from later bookbinder intervention in an article on the difference between a publisher’s binding and a bookbinder’s binding —in the case of émigré publications, this knowledge is particularly useful, as many copies were bound years later, privately, due to a lack of access to the original cover.

Today, several decades after most of these publishers were founded, their works are gradually making their way from private bookshelves onto the antiquarian book market. For collectors, this remains a relatively unexplored area—many readers are familiar with the name *Kultura*, but few know how to distinguish a genuine first edition from the Instytut Literacki among the later domestic reprints, which, after 1989, were published en masse and lacked that original, émigré historical significance.

The history of Polish émigré publishing houses—from *Kultura* in Paris to the London-based presses—and why their modest publications are often hard to find today.

[861

post-38068","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
["GET
