That’s only natural—and that’s exactly why some sellers offer prices that are far out of line with the market, hoping the customer won’t ask for details. Proper appraisal of antique books isn’t about just throwing out a number and waiting for a reaction; it’s about explaining where that number comes from. Below are a few questions worth asking before you decide to sell even a single copy.

Questions that reveal whether an antiquarian bookseller is really looking at the book

On what basis is this price determined? An honest antiquarian dealer will cite specific factors: print run, rarity of the edition, condition, and current transactions on the secondary market. An answer along the lines of “because that’s what it’s worth” without any justification should raise a red flag.

Is this the first edition or a reprint? The year of publication shown on the title page isn’t always the whole story—the print run, the publisher, and whether a given edition was the first or a subsequent one also matter. Price differences between editions of the same novel can be enormous, as we discussed in more detail in our article on which editions are more valuable and why.

How does the condition of an item affect its valuation? Stains, missing dust jacket, loose spine, pencil markings—all of these factors reduce the book’s value, but they should be explicitly stated rather than hidden in a single lump-sum deduction. It’s a good idea to ask the antiquarian bookseller to specify the particular defects they’re taking into account.

Is the binding original, from the publisher, or a later bookbinder’s binding? This question is particularly important when it comes to older books, because a binding added later—even a very sturdy one—usually does not increase the book’s collectible value as much as the original binding does. We’ve described the differences between these two types of bindings and how to distinguish them in our article on publishing and bookbinding.

Does the price reflect the condition of the item? A missing plate, a torn page with an illustration, an incomplete set of volumes—these issues are often not immediately apparent, yet they significantly affect the value. A reputable antiquarian bookseller will check for these issues themselves and inform the customer before quoting a final price.

What is this valuation compared to—similar transactions or asking prices online? This is an important distinction: the price listed on an online store does not mean that the book actually sold for that price. An honest answer should distinguish between listed prices and prices actually achieved.

Can the antique dealer point out similar items that he has sold recently? It’s not about revealing trade secrets, but about showing that the valuation isn’t just pulled out of thin air—it’s based on experience and knowledge of a specific market segment.

Is the quote binding or just an estimate? It’s important to know right away whether the quoted amount is a concrete purchase offer or just a starting point for further discussion—and how much time the antique dealer needs to confirm it in writing.

When Is It a Good Idea to Ask for More Information?

With older prints, especially those from before the 19th century, another question arises: does a given item even fall under the category of antiquarian prints? This is because the valuation method and the pool of potential buyers are entirely different depending on the answer. The year 1800, which is often cited here, is in practice arbitrary—we discuss this topic in more detail in our article on what constitutes an antique book. Similarly, it’s worth asking about books with dedications, bookplates, or traces of ownership by well-known individuals—these elements can increase a copy’s value, but only if they are identified and verified.

How to Sell Old Books Without Feeling Like You’re Missing Out

If the seller provides specific answers to the above questions, can explain the basis for the price, and doesn’t shy away from questions about the item’s condition, that’s a good sign you’re dealing with a reliable transaction partner. However, if there is time pressure, vague answers, or a reluctance to explain the differences between individual items, it’s a good idea to gather several quotes from different sources before making a decision. This isn’t a sign of distrust, but rather standard practice when selling anything with an ambiguous market value.

Selling books from an estate or a private collection doesn’t have to be stressful if you know what questions to ask. A few specific questions help you distinguish a fair appraisal from a random figure and provide a basis for making a well-informed decision—regardless of whether the book ultimately ends up in a used bookstore, at an auction, or stays in your home library.

What does a reliable appraisal of antique books look like, and what questions should you ask the seller before deciding to sell?

[861

post-38065","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
["GET
