Mariusz Karpowicz

PWN
21 cm, 191, [1] p., [104] p. of plates,half-leather binding

A book devoted to the art and culture of the Polish Enlightenment period, particularly in the context of the Sarmatian tradition. The author analyzes how the ideals of Sarmatism – deeply rooted in the culture of the noble Republic – evolved under the influence of new intellectual and artistic currents of the 18th century. The book shows the transition from Baroque splendor to more classicist and rational forms of expression, discussing the painting, architecture, sculpture and handicrafts of that era.

The book comes from a bibliophilic thematic sub-collection of about 500 specialized titles on Polish painting of the 19th and 20th centuries. A copy in a noble half-leather binding made in the bindery of the Polish Antiquarian.
